Groningen → Silver Coast
Two years after Henk passed away, our house in Groningen felt too big and too quiet. The children had left the country, the winters were endless. I didn't want to wait until I was too old to start something new.
A friend living in Nazaré invited me for three weeks. Those three weeks became three months. The sun, the sea, the peace — but also the warmth of the people. For the first time in years I felt alive again.
The Silver Coast (Costa de Prata) is quieter than the Algarve. Fewer tourists, lower prices, and an authentic Portuguese character. I rent an apartment in São Martinho do Porto for €650 per month — with sea view.
Healthcare was my biggest concern. I have some chronic conditions and was worried about the language barrier. But the Centro de Saúde in my village is excellent, and there are doctors who speak English. For specialist care I go to Caldas da Rainha, 20 minutes by car.
Building a social life as a single senior isn't easy, but it works. There's a Dutch women's club, I join a walking group, and I have Portuguese neighbors who bring me cake. The expat community is surprisingly close-knit.
My tip: don't be afraid to go alone. Portugal is safe, the people are warm and life is simple in the best way. I miss Groningen sometimes — but I wouldn't want to go back.
