After six years at a high-tech company in Eindhoven, I felt stuck. Good salary, nice team, but limited growth opportunities. Australia had been calling me since university β€” the combination of a strong economy, English as the main language and the outdoor lifestyle really appealed to me.

It all started with the skills assessment through Engineers Australia. My Dutch degree was recognized, but it took three months and a mountain of paperwork. Then came the Expression of Interest via SkillSelect. With my age, work experience and IELTS score of 8.0, I had enough points for the Subclass 189 visa β€” the holy grail, because you immediately become a permanent resident.

The first weeks in Sydney were overwhelming. Everything is bigger, more expensive and further away than you think. My first steps: applying for a TFN at the ATO, opening an Australian bank account at Commonwealth Bank, and enrolling in Medicare. That last one was a relief β€” basic healthcare is free as a PR holder.

Finding work went surprisingly fast. My Dutch experience in the semiconductor industry turned out to be in demand in Australia. Within three weeks I had a contract at an engineering firm in North Sydney. The salary was nearly double what I earned in Eindhoven, but rent in Sydney is also steep β€” expect AUD 600-800 per week for a decent apartment.

What surprised me most is the work-life balance. Australians work hard, but at five o'clock it's done. Friday afternoon barbecue at the office is completely normal. And weekends? Surfing at Bondi, hiking in the Blue Mountains or just a picnic in the park. The outdoor life here is priceless.

My tip for other engineers: start your skills assessment and IELTS early. My entire 189 visa process took fourteen months from first application to grant. Patience is essential. But when you get that letter saying you're a permanent resident β€” you know it was worth it.
