I had a construction company in Rotterdam for twelve years, specializing in sustainable building and energy renovation. The market was good, but I felt constrained by Dutch regulations and price competition. When I saw a documentary in 2022 about the rebuilding of Christchurch after the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, I saw an opportunity I couldn't pass up.

The Entrepreneur Work Visa from INZ is designed for people who want to start a business that offers "significant benefit" to New Zealand. You must submit a detailed business plan, invest at least NZ$100,000 (excluding working capital), and demonstrate relevant experience. My plan focused on sustainable housing with European insulation standards — something Christchurch desperately needed.

The application took eight months. INZ evaluates your business plan on feasibility, innovation and job creation. I had to demonstrate I would create three jobs within two years. My investment of NZ$150,000 went toward equipment, a van and the first months' rent of a workshop in Addington. An immigration advisor in Christchurch helped me with the application — essential, because the forms are complex.

Christchurch is a city in transition. The center has been rebuilt with modern architecture, but there are still thousands of homes that need strengthening or replacing. My company, "Kiwi Green Build", focuses on insulating and earthquake-proofing existing homes. The demand is enormous — within three months I had more work than I could handle and had to hire a second team.

Doing business in New Zealand is different from the Netherlands. You register your company online with the Companies Office in a day. GST (VAT) is a flat 15%. Bookkeeping is simpler. But building regulations are strict, especially since the earthquakes. Every construction must comply with the Building Code and be inspected by the local council. That's good — it keeps quality high.

After three years on my Entrepreneur Work Visa I can apply for Entrepreneur Residence. The requirements: at least two years of active business, NZ$100,000 invested and three full-time jobs created. I'm well above that. Christchurch is a fantastic city for business — affordable, growing and with a community that values collaboration over competition. My tip: dare to take the leap, but come with a solid plan.
