Niels & Emily(35)
Tilburg → Sunshine Coast
It sounds like a cliché: Dutch backpacker meets Australian girl in Byron Bay. But that's exactly what happened. I was on my WHV, working as a bartender at a cocktail bar, and Emily was there with friends for the weekend. We clicked immediately. When my visa expired, I flew back to Tilburg heartbroken.
For two years we flew back and forth. Emily came to the Netherlands, I went to Australia on tourist visas. It was expensive and exhausting. Eventually we decided: I'll move to Australia on a Subclass 820/801 partner visa. The application was a bureaucratic beast — you need to prove your relationship is "genuine and continuing."
The evidence Immigration requires is intense. Joint bank accounts, photos together, statements from friends and family, proof of communication (we printed 200 pages of WhatsApp messages), flight tickets from our visits. Our MARA-registered migration agent helped us compile the file. Total costs: AUD 8,850 visa fees plus AUD 3,500 for the agent.
The 820 visa is temporary — you can work and live in Australia while waiting for the permanent 801 visa. The current waiting time is eighteen to twenty-four months. During that period you can do everything except leave Australia without a travel permit. It's a strange limbo, but at least you're together.
We chose the Sunshine Coast over Byron Bay for affordability. Noosa, Maroochydore, Caloundra — they're beautiful coastal towns with a relaxed vibe, but without Sydney prices. We rent a house in Coolum Beach for AUD 550 per week with ocean views. I work as a hospitality manager at a resort, Emily is a primary school teacher.
My advice to others in a long-distance relationship with an Australian: start documenting early. Save everything — tickets, photos, joint expenses, messages. The more evidence, the stronger your case. And use a MARA agent — the rules change constantly and a mistake can delay your application by months.
