Leiden β Hobart
I studied biology in Leiden and specialized in marine ecosystems. After my PhD I worked two years as a postdoc, but permanent positions in Dutch academia are rarer than a blue whale. When I saw a vacancy at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies in Hobart, I applied without hesitation.
IMAS sponsored my Subclass 482 visa. As a researcher you're on the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List, which speeds up the process. My employer arranged most of it β including a relocation allowance of AUD 5,000 and temporary housing for the first month. The skills assessment went through VETASSESS and took three months.
Hobart is small β about 250,000 people β and that's exactly why I love it. You know your neighbors, the barista knows your name and nature literally starts at the edge of the city. Mount Wellington, the Derwent River, the historic Salamanca Market on Saturdays β it's a place where you truly live rather than just work.
Tasmania's climate is the least Australian in all of Australia. Cool winters around 10 degrees, mild summers around 22 degrees β it resembles the Netherlands more than Queensland. Perfect for me. I don't miss the heat and the nature here is spectacular: Cradle Mountain, Wineglass Bay, the old-growth forests of the Tarkine.
Living in Hobart is surprisingly affordable compared to the big cities. I rent a cottage in Battery Point for AUD 420 per week β a fraction of Sydney prices. The housing market is rising as more mainlanders discover Tasmania, but it's still the most affordable state.
Tasmania gives extra points for state nomination for the Subclass 190 visa, and I plan to transition from my 482. The university has already indicated they want to nominate me. My tip: look beyond Sydney and Melbourne. Australia has so much more to offer, and sometimes you find home in the place you least expect.
